Doug Madill is a seasoned artist and designer based in Edmonton, Alberta, working primarily in soft pastel. A graduate of the Alberta College of Art and Design (now Alberta University of the Arts), he has led his award-winning studio, Madillustration Design Inc., for over three decades.
Inspired by a lifelong appreciation for nature and everyday beauty, Doug draws on moments spent fishing, hiking, skating, or simply observing the sky. His impressionistic pastel paintings capture the familiarity of a place with freshness and feeling, favouring expressive brushwork over hyperreal detail.
A distinctive element of his work is the “live edge” presentation, revealing the raw interplay between pastel and surface. Over the years, he has developed a textured ground that enriches his bold, dynamic technique. Doug also welcomes custom commissions, collaborating with collectors to create personal, meaningful works.

This distinctive framing system - the MADFRAME was designed and built by Doug Madill and his son specifically to showcase Doug’s pastel paintings with a bold and creative aesthetic. If you love the artwork but the frame isn’t quite your style, the painting can be purchased on its own and framed in a more traditional way.
