John Morel

Master Craftsman - “The Furniture Maker”
Medium: Wood

John Morel is one of Canada’s most respected master craftsmen, creating heirloom-quality furniture for over 40 years. His signature style—characterized by graceful curves, intricate inlays, and refined craftsmanship—often incorporates materials such as metal, stone, and shell, resulting in striking, functional works of art.

Originally from Hampshire, England, John discovered woodworking through his father. At fifteen, he apprenticed as a blacksmith, becoming a master by twenty-one. He later studied silversmithing and lettering at the Victoria College of Arts in Birmingham and Worcester College before emigrating to Canada in 1964. In 1976, he shifted his focus to furniture making, launching a celebrated career that earned him the title “The Furniture Maker.”

John’s work has been featured in numerous publications, and he has mentored many emerging woodworkers through design workshops across the province. He approaches each commission as a collaboration, built on open communication, trust, and shared vision.

“There’s nothing quick or cheap about custom furniture; it requires an investment. But the finished product is worth it.”
