Valery Filipov

Medium: Photography & Oil

Valery Filipov’s lifelong passion for faces and emotions first led him to earn a diploma in photography in Leningrad (Soviet Union) in the early 1980s, where he built a successful portrait studio. Although he explored other fields, including computer technology, his love for portraiture remained constant, leading him to study oil painting under Gene Prokop Pro’s Art School here in Edmonton.

Valery has created a series of oil portraits depicting classical writers and composers, inspired by their timeless stories and music. Using old black-and-white photographs, he crafts impressionistic, monotone paintings that balance bold brushwork with refined detail, capturing both the chaos and harmony of his subjects.

His portraits invite viewers to connect with the character and emotion behind figures who have inspired generations. Valery has exhibited his work in various group shows over the years.
