Mark Totan

Medium: Stone

Mark Totan (d. 2022) was an Inuk artist from Igloolik, Nunavut, known for his expressive soapstone carvings that reflect the history, symbols, and daily life of Canada’s Indigenous peoples. A self-taught carver, Mark began working with stone in the late 1980s, using traditional tools and techniques. He allowed the stone to guide his process, creating works rich in texture, form, and cultural significance.

After relocating to Edmonton in 1993, Mark continued to carve and teach his sons, Clivelon and Tony, passing on his knowledge in the traditional way. Each sculpture was created using traditional methods, beginning with hammer and chisel, and finished with rasps, files, and hand polishing.

Mark’s pieces have been shown in galleries throughout Edmonton, Calgary, Banff, and Jasper, and sold through the Hudson Bay Co-op. His work is held in numerous private and corporate collections worldwide and has been featured in various public art and business projects.

Bay 1 Gallery is honoured to present select pieces from a private collection.
