James Lavoie

Medium: Glass

Alberta-born James Lavoie began his creative journey through clay and stained glass, developing an intuitive sense of form, proportion, and the interplay of light, colour, and texture. Though formally trained in zoology,  it was the visual arts that became his true outlet—initially through stained glass in the 1970s, and later, glassblowing, which introduced a spontaneous and fast-paced dimension to his work.

In the 1990s, he discovered kiln-formed glass—a perfect blend of stained glass precision and molten spontaneity. This became his professional focus for the following decades. His work later expanded to include casting and pâte de verre, always grounded in simple design and careful detail. The result: unique, elegant, refined pieces that enhance the natural beauty of glass.

His work has been shown and sold over the years at the Art Gallery of Alberta, Alberta Craft Council, Van Dop Gallery, The Canadian Glass, Drop Gallery and others.
